The Strategy Used by the North: The Mississippi River had to be crossed to go into Louisiana, so General Ulysses S. Grant could march south. The supply boats is where his troop met so they could cross back into the Mississippi. He then decided to move without a supply line so his army could move quickly. At Port Gibson the Confederates proved that they could not defend the Mississippi line. Therefore in the Battle of Jackson Grant could easily defeat the Confederate Army and moved to Vicksburg knowing that this would prevent reinforcement from the Confederacy in Vicksburg. Grant was forced to siege since he trapped 30,000 Confederate troops in Vicksburg. Six weeks after Grant's bombardment, July 4th on 1863, the Confederates surrendered.
The Strategy Used by the South: During the winter in 1862-1863 Pemberton's forces could hold of Grant's army. There was not much of a plan on the side of the South because Permberton's ideal conviction was to preserve his army. His main objective was simply to protect Vicksburg but when Grant confused Pemberton, he then technically allowed the Union to travel on the East bank of the river which caused the confederates to be trapped in Vicksburg. He lost his whole strategy when he lost the southern port of Vicksburg. In the end he surrounded to Grant and his army.
Outcome of the Battle:
The Battle of Vicksburg started on May 18, 1863. The Union won after the South had no choice but to surrender to Grant and his troops due to the siege that the Union caused. The war ended on July 4, 1863 in favor of the Union.
